Jumpstarting petrol V40 from a diesel car

Can we do it? Brand new battery (2 months old) is dead and car won't start. It keeps making a clicking noise which is probably the alternator. Can I jump start it from a diesel car just to charge the battery? Thanks, Jo

The clicking noise is more likely the solenoid on your starter motor, you will be able to jump start from the diesel no problem but I would be more concerned as to why your battery is dead if it is only two months old. Did you buy a quality heavy duty battery as Volvo's do tend to put a hell of a strain on their battery's what with all the lights and electronics, is your alternator charging properly, do you do a lot of short trips in the car? All could contribute to the battery failing, or it could even be your starter motor that is faulty, I would start with the battery ,give it a good charge and see if it turns the starter motor then use a process of elimination to determine what the cause is.

I've been doing shorter trips lately and haven't had the chance to take it for a long run, so that may be it. I'm getting hold of a 2nd hand alternator just in case. I'll speak to the garage about the battery, he's a small independent and a good guy, I know we put a heavier duty one back on. Will get the battery on charge and see how we go. you could also try sticking the car in gear and rocking it to free the starting motor - or whack it with a hammer. Temporary but it works.
