Pre 93 Race Cars?

After extensive searching I have not been able to find if any one raced a Volvo Estate before the 850's in any European/British Touring Car Championship. Maybe a 240? I've found rally 240's and 145's (mainly from Scandinavia) but not any track cars. Does anyone know? Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the info Kerry, I know all about the 850's. I have a super model of Rydells 850 estate on my desk at work. I love the early cars and often go to see them race. (a Independent Volvo dealer races a Lotus Cortina !!! in the Post Historic Touring Car Championship Class D)

I have only ever seen one lotus cortina before at castle coombe on a track day, rare car! The classic touring cars sound good, where abouts do you go to watch? Are they actual ex-works touring cars?

Brands Hatch was the last meet. I try to get to the Brands meets as it's normally only a hours drive for me. I get on the South Bank. Handy for Druids and Surtees. The Lotus Cortina is Raced by Greg Carpenter from Guildford. Some are ex.works motors. Allsorts from Jaguar XJS's, Daimler Sovereigns on one hand to BMW 2002's, 3 litre Capri's a very early Mazda RX7, Opel Asconda, Fiesta XR2's. Makes for some really great racing. Dave

Yes indeed - Volvo arguably won a harder (although less well known today) battle in 83/84 when they won the European touring car championship (ETCC) with a 242 Turbo. This though, of course, wasn't an estate. Various privateer estates have been used, but I'm not aware of factory involvement prior to the 850s. cheers James
