Microtonic thirded. The new update with the extended pattern editor is great. (I use battery too)

There are many. It mainly depends on if you're looking for drumsynth or drum rompler, and if you wish to go for modern sounds or retro sounds... I made the samples featured in Impakter, and the focus is on quick & easy setup and instant retro sound. It is a drum rompler. It is only one choice among other ;)

I'm using Vemberaudio Shortcircuit (it's free). As long as you know how to do it, you have endless possibilities to create electronic drums out of non-electronic drum sounds. My normal working process consists of recording about one minute of a youtube-drummer playing his drums and then cutting out a loop that does have a clear kick, snare and hihat. After that, I load the loop into Sortcircuit and start creating electronic drums by using the ADSR parameters and usually a LP or HP filter. Also, changing the pitch of the sounds or using two samples triggered by one key works very well. Sounds like a lot of work, but after some tries it's a thing that takes about 10 or 15 minutes.
If you're going down the sampler road One Small Clue's Poise is a great alternative at half the price of uTonic (though it has no sequencer and obviously no synth engine). Combine it with the free Goldbaby samples for some retro vibe. It's a great piece of drum sampler with both velocity layering and round-robin support. It's really flexible when it comes to setting up pads and sounds the way you like it.
