Volvo 245 Automatic Gearbox.Please advise.

Hello Could anyone tell as to what maybe happening with the Automatic gearbox on a 1990 Volvo 245? The unit seems to function ok,but it emits an obvious mid pitch whine in the lower gears at a certain rev range. The car is a high miler with just over 200,000 miles on the clock and has been used for towing. Could this noise be a symptom of a rather worn gearbox.What would be the lifespan of an automatic gearbox on a 240. If anyone could provide any advice/info on this matter,I would be very grateful. Thankyou.

Are you sure it's coming from the gearbox? Mine's done 175000 and is completely quiet...

Hello Henrik Yes,the noise seems to be most definitely coming the gearbox. My experience with Volvo (Borg Warner 55?) auto boxes is that they have always been rather quiet in their operation,hence my concern.

The auto on mine - '85 240 GL with 280,000km - seems to have a mix of whines and whistles. Gearbox was apparently serviced not too long ago by the local Volvo agent and seems to otherwise work ok, apart from the kickdown, which doesn't work at all... I've now just got used to the various noises. I keep the fluid clean and topped up + I'll worry about it if the car should suddenly come to a halt! However, if anyone should have some idea of the cause of these noises, I would be most interested and grateful! Kind regards, John.
